Buyer’s guide: what to consider when choosing an Instant Pot steamer basket

  • Cooker size and fit: Match the basket to your Instant Pot model. The Instant Pot Official silicone is listed as compatible with 6 Qt and 8 Qt cookers; the stainless model is listed for 8 QT; Avokado lists multiple size variants. For other baskets, double‑check the fit on the product page.
  • Material preference: Silicone is lightweight, resists rust, and avoids holes that trap food. Stainless steel is sturdy and classic. Choose based on how you plan to use and maintain the basket.
  • Handles and safety: If you often remove a hot basket, look for a silicone‑covered handle or loop handles to reduce burn risk (the stainless and Good Grips models list these features).
  • Cleaning and care: Dishwasher‑safe options make cleanup easier (listed for some models). If the listing doesn’t specify dishwasher safety, plan to hand wash or confirm details on the product page.
  • Versatility: If you want a basket that works off the Instant Pot (stovetop or microwave), check the product details for that capability—Good Grips is listed as suitable for those uses.
  • Budget and durability: Silicone options avoid rust and mesh maintenance; stainless may feel more durable but requires typical metal care. Choose based on long‑term use and cleaning preferences.

How to use and care for your Instant Pot steamer basket

Basic steaming steps (general guidance)

  • Add the recommended amount of liquid to your Instant Pot (follow your Instant Pot manual for minimum water).
  • Place the trivet or basket inside so food is elevated above the water (use rubber feet or a trivet if needed).
  • Arrange food in a single layer where possible for even steaming.
  • Close and seal the lid, set the appropriate cooking program, and allow pressure to release per your recipe.
  • Use the basket’s handles (if present) or tongs to lift the basket carefully after pressure is released and the lid is opened.

Cleaning and storage tips

  • Dishwasher‑safe baskets: load per manufacturer spacing recommendations. The Instant Pot Official Silicone Steamer Basket, Instant Pot Accessories Steamer Basket (8 QT), and Good Grips model are listed as dishwasher safe in the supplied features.
  • Silicone without a dishwasher claim: hand wash gently with warm, soapy water if the listing does not specify dishwasher safety (Avokado’s supplied features do not include dishwasher wording).
  • Dry metal baskets fully to avoid water spots; rinse and fully air‑dry silicone baskets before storing.
